Philosophical Counselling / Life Coaching

You might think when you see the term philosophy that this kind of counselling is intellectually too demanding or even intellectually discriminating. However, this would be far from the truth. If you think about psychotherapy or psychology how much of the theory behind those subjects are you required to know?

This form of counselling differs from any other form of counselling because it engages with the client in a spirit of open enquiry. Many psychotherapists would object that they also engage with the client in a spirit of open enquiry. However, in reply, philosophical counselling differs in that it is not rooted in a medical model, which influences the interaction between the client and the counsellor. Neither does it adhere to any particular philosophical theory.

Philosophical counselling, through conversation, is an exploration of your world-view. It is probably easier to think of your world-view as your personal philosophy, and would include the way you view yourself, and others. The counsellor will listen to your issues and reflect on them bringing out deeper meanings, values, and beliefs, using philosophical tools and insights. While this can be challenging it is never insensitive to you - the client - and you always remain in control of the process.

I have mentioned above that counselling based on philosophy is not a therapy in the conventional sense because it is not rooted in a medical model.  However, this is not to say that it does not have a therapeutic value. That value may lay in finding a new way to look at your issues rather than in concrete answers to them.
